STATE REP. WAYNE SMITH: RESIGNING FROM LEGISLATURE

Posted: Feb. 27, 2007

State Rep. Wayne A. Smith, a Brandywine Hundred Republican, today announced that he is retiring Monday, March 12, from the House of Representatives, where he serves as the majority leader.

Smith, 44, is leaving elected office to take a position as the president and chief executive officer of the Delaware Healthcare Association, a statewide trade and membership services organization that represents hospitals and other health care organizations.

“Leaving the General Assembly is a difficult decision. However, I am very excited about the professional opportunity of working with Delaware’s health care leaders,” Smith said.

“I have tremendously enjoyed public policy making as an elected official. One of the attractive features of this opportunity is that I will be able to continue to work on health care issues affecting our state’s residents.”

Smith was first elected to the House in 1990 and became majority leader in 1996. He and his wife Lisa have four children.
