FRACTURED QUOTATIONS

By Celia Cohen
Grapevine Political Writer

April Fools'. Here are some famous sayings that really were meant to be about Delaware politics.

Tony DeLuca. By ordering up a new doorway for his Legislative Hall office in Dover, the Senate's Democratic president pro tem gave nearly everybody something to hate.

Let us count the ways: DeLuca had the project done on nothing but his own authority. It cost almost $50,000 in these austere times. It was designed to make it harder for people to get in to see him.

Ronald Reagan would have known what to make of it.

Mr. DeLuca, tear down this door!

Christine O'Donnell. When the Tea Party carried O'Donnell to the Republican senatorial nomination, she had herself one of the most famous campaigns of the 2010 election. It also meant she had the most famous townhouse in Delaware. Home or campaign headquarters, it is still a mystery fit for a federal investigation.

Whatever, there was a minor political party formed in New York -- no kidding, this is not an April Fools' joke -- with a slogan that comes to O'Donnell's defense.

Rent is too damn high!

Mike Castle. What a nightmare of a campaign season he had, the most successful Republican all-time in Delaware politics losing the Senate primary. It was like the political equivalent of "Jurassic Park," a horror that was never expected to happen. A new anti-government movement came menacingly out of nowhere to run him down. Call it:

Tea-Rex!

Chris Coons. The Democratic senator had a choice a couple of Saturdays ago. He had two invitations. He could go to a spring dinner in Sussex County, which did not even give him 40 percent of the vote against O'Donnell, or he could go to Philadelphia to deliver a speech at a gala for the Human Rights Campaign, a gay rights organization that would be thrilled-thrilled-thrilled to have a real live United States senator present.

What did Coons decide? Cue W.C. Fields.

All things considered, I'd rather be in Philadelphia.

Jack Markell. The Democratic governor knows the drill. When the going gets tough, a Cabinet secretary gets purged. So much for the secretary of DelDOT.

Mother Goose saw this one coming.

Jack was nimble.

Jack was quick.

Jack got rid of

Carolann Wicks.
